Plant and Cuttings Exchange
Scheme
The Scheme coordinator is Bill Hildyard.
Note 1: This scheme is only open to Members of the Society.
Note 2: Plants for exchange need not necessarily be limited to those within our remit, but might also include other interesting succulents, so those members who have only a few eligible plants should not be inhibited from joining.
Aims of the scheme
- To promote conservation by propagation/distribution of Haworthia, Aloe, Gasteria and related plants.
- To help Society Members to acquire plants that may not be readily available.
- To distribute plants with known locality data that may help in the understanding of the genera.
Compilation of lists of plants available
Members send their surplus plant lists to the exchange scheme co-ordinator with the following details:
- Plant Names - if a name is not certain, a question mark should be placed after it.
- Locality data/source/field no./collector's accession no. - if available
- There will be two Categories of plant materials - Category A - free exchange Category B (rare/choice plants) - need mutual agreement between members.
- Member's correspondence address/E-mail address.
The list will be compiled by the exchange scheme co-ordinator and will then be distributed to all Society Members. Members participating in the scheme will receive a key page that contains participants' addresses.
Running of the exchange scheme
This scheme needs some simple rules to make it work:
- Do not request more than 10 items from any participants unless previously agreed.
- For category B plants: contact the participants concerned to see whether he is interested in any category B items offered by you.
- Pack plants in crush-proof boxes with legible labels.
- Acknowledge receipt of any packages as soon as possible.
- Pay for postage unless you are reciprocating.
- As the application of CITES and Phytosanitary regulations are tedious and expensive, exchanges are regrettably only possible within certain countries. Thus, participants in the EC can exchange with those in any other EC country but for other countries, exchange is restricted within their own country.
- If you think a cutting that you have sent has been wrongly named, please inform the participant and the exchange co-ordinator. If possible a spare cutting may be sent to the exchange co-ordinator. This will help to correct any error in the list.
